THE BARBER OF SEVILLE by Gioachino Rossini
June 22 and 25 at 7:00pm; June 26 at 2:00pm
In English translation, directed by Jonathon Field.
We open the 2005 season with a production of the oldest opera by an Italian composer never to have disappeared from the repertoire, and perhaps the greatest of all comic operas. Rossini’s opera achieves melodic elegance, rhythmic exhilaration, superb ensemble writing, and original and delightful orchestration. Premiering in Rome in 1816, The Barber of Seville was last produced by Lyric Opera Cleveland in 1995. We lovingly dedicate this production to anyone who has ever sung “Figaro!” in the shower! Join us for Rossini’s comic masterpiece.

You’ll dance in your seat to the many familiar tunes in this classic show, including “Good Morning, Good Day,” “Vanilla Ice Cream,” and the title number, “She Loves Me!”
THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER by Philip Glass after the classic tale by Edgar Allan Poe

On the heels of our critically-acclaimed 2004 production of Little Women, Lyric maintains its commitment to innovative productions of works by contemporary American composers with this chamber opera by the popular and controversial Philip Glass. This treatment of Poe’s Gothic horror story of demented lust in a crumbling castle premiered in 1988 at the American Repertory Theater, and makes its first Ohio production with Lyric Opera Cleveland.
